Assassin’s Creed Unity Review

Assassin’s Creed Unity is the first game of the series to release on next-gen consoles and truly benefits from the extra power provided by supplying us with stunning visuals and a detailed view of  18th-century Paris. Freerunning has never been so exciting and immersive, which is a great improvement over previous games. Climbing iconic landmarks such as the Notre Dame Cathedral is always a memorable experience and the view from the top is breathtaking. Overall Ubisoft has done a fantastic job designing Paris and making sure the game looks great.

This time around, we play as Arno Victor Dorian, who joined the Assassin Brotherhood in order to avenge the death of his father and adoptive father. The story is where the game falls behind and it’s mainly due to it being very plain and unexciting. Arno’s character feels too hotheaded and young to be an assassin, but at least he performs well when climbing and fighting. The story Missions were actually really well made and designed  and there is a whole bunch of fun side-activities to enjoy  especially the murder mysteries. The ending was a bit disappointing and expected but at least it wasn’t exaggerated. It isn’t bad by any means, but one would expect a bit more creativity.

The public protests and executions are new to the game and really help in portraying how Paris was like during the revolution. If you wish to avoid walking between the angry crowd you can always climb rooftops and benefit from how versatile Arno is and how smooth moving around feels. Like most games nowadays, there were bugs during launch that would frustrate players such as getting stuck in geometry and issues with the characters features but it is nothing a few patches won’t fix.

In addition to the single-player  campaign there are the multiplayer missions where you can play missions with up to four others. It was a blast playing with friends, trying to assassinate the target using different methods and helping each other out. It is highly recommended to play with acquaintances who are also fans of the game as playing with random players can sometimes lead to them playing the mission the way they like and not the way you want.

In conclusion the game is good and is a significant improvement over other games in the series. The visuals are breathtaking, the climbing and running feel great, and the missions are well designed. However, Arno’s  character doesn’t have much depth and the story isn’t very original. Overall, Assassin’s Creed Unity is good and can act like a foundation for future games to release on next-gen consoles.
