Persona 5 Royal is an enhanced edition of the critically acclaimed JRPG that released a few years ago, which features such as new story content, charcters, locations and much more. Additionally, it includes all of the DLC originally released for the base game, which mainly include costume sets. Persona 5 Royal has the same main story of the original game, which follows the Phantom Thieves in their quest to infiltrate the minds of the corrupt in hopes of changing their ways.
Most of Persona 5 Royal ‘s new content appears right after the final dungeon in the original game which gives players another “Third Semester” of school from December to January which offers up to 30 hours of gameplay. Boss battles and palaces have also been reworked to make each encounter more unique and memorable from a gameplay perspective. The Phantom Thieves now have a grappling hook which allows you to infiltrate new areas you otherwise couldn’t. Showtimes are also a great addition in the form of , special double-team attacks that deal massive damage and are a spectacle to watch, especially in the last few boss battles.
In terms of new characters, we’ve got Kasumi, an aspiring gymnast, and Maruki, the school counselor. Both have compelling backstories which help them become as intriguing and likable as the main cast. The new characters even receive their own Confidants who are engaging and quite funny.
Persona 5 Royal adds Kichijoji as a new area with new activities such as playing darts and pool to improve your abilities. Customizing your own personal Thieves Den was enjoyable and acts as a great way to hang out and take a break from the story. There are also several new music tracks in Royal and for the most part, they’re quite enjoyable. As expected with this type of release, some minor gameplay tweaks and QOL improvements where implemented to make the overall experience smoother.
Whether you have played games with a turn-based combat system or not, Royal makes for a good starting point for veterans and newcomers to the series. If you never got around to playing the original game, then Persona 5 Royal is the perfect way to get introduced to the world of the Phantom Thieves. Royal takes the already a fantastic game and expands on it by adding a plethora of new story and gameplay content while still staying true to the original.
